EUREKA VILLA ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

THE 6TH PERMANENT ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND IN THE U.S.

ABOUT THE  EUREKA VILLA ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

Named after the years 1924-1928 when Val Verde was called “Eureka Villa” as a resort community, this park is a hybrid adventure playground and community space Located in the northern part of Los Angeles County in Val Verde, CA. We believe Eureka Villa had a previous life as a park during Val Verde's "Black Palm Springs" era when many of Hollywood's African American stars would vacation in Val Verde during segregation in Los Angeles.

We are very conscious of honoring its history by doing our best to create a space that nurtures a safe natural environment for those who often do not have access.

Eureka Villa is filled with rope swings, elderberry forts, a “bug van”, a giant bird cage, loose parts, and more. Eureka Villa is just shy of 2 acres and contains within its boundaries over 118 trees! Not only do we have such an incredible selection of trees, due to the age of the park, most are over 100 feet tall!  We have 2 working stone grills, tire swings, and a few picnic benches still able to hold bodies.

Depending on the season, Eureka Villa is open to the public on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and on the second Saturday of each month. It is also home to an afternoon homeschool enrichment program and we often hold neighborhood events and private birthday parties, scout meetings, adult gatherings, elderberry pickings (mid-June) and much more.

ABOUT
VISITING EUREKA VILLA

In addition to staffing Eureka Villa with Playworkers focused on making the space as unadulterated as possible for the children at play, we ask visiting caregivers to follow our "Lightest Touch Policy".

This policy requires caregivers to continue to support their kids' play by mindfully "following their lead" by avoiding telling them how to play or inserting themselves into their play.

All players have only 2 rules:

1. Try not to hurt yourself

2. Try not to hurt any other living things at the site (including plants and animals).

We are open to all ages though we ask that players 4 years and younger stay under the purview of their caregivers. We also allow dogs (!) but do ask that the pet owner is responsible for their animal(s).

TIPS

Because Eureka Villa is still a considerably "wild" space without electricity and water we recommend bringing the following to make your visit the best it can be:

>Closed Toed Shoes

>Dress for mess and the weather

>Water Bottles & Water

>Picnic Blankets/Chairs

>Extra set of clothes

>Jacket/Coats for possible temperature shifts

>Snacks

>Any other items which help you feel comfortable in nature

PLAY PROGRAMS & CAMPS

The Benefit of the Repeat Visitor

There is no doubt that young people gain the most from adventure playgrounds when they are repeat visitors! When a player returns multiple times in a week they are able to build on any creative spark from the day before, have the opportunity to overcome any hurdles they have been dealing with both creatively and socially and our playworkers are able to develop a relationship with them and in turn are better informed about what loose parts they can provide to better enhance that child's experience on the playground as well as support their growth.

We offer the following programs at Eureka Villa at different points throughout the year. Please click through for more information on each program.
